in august 2025, → Dame Stephanie Shirley passed away.

she was born Vera Stephanie Buchthal in 1933 in dortmund. her grandmother Rosa was the first woman on dortmund’s city council. in dortmund, there is a street named after her. Vera’s father was a lawyer and judge at the courts in dortmund and hamm, a city close to dortmund. 1933 was a very bad time for germany — especially for so-called “half-jews” like Vera and jews like Vera’s father. he lost his job and was imprisoned for a time. in the summer of 1939, the parents sent Vera and her older sister Renate on a train to england. this Kindertransport brought the nazis a lot of money and tore families apart.

Vera felt very comfortable with the english foster family. she quickly forgot her german and took the english name Stephanie Brook. as the only girl, she attended a boys’ school, because that was the only place mathematics was taught.

her first job was at the royal mail, where she worked as a programmer, but saw no opportunities for advancement for women. she founded a much-ridiculed women-only software company. success proved her right: the F. International Group was soon flooded with orders.

in 1963 her son Giles was born, severely autistic. when the software company went public, some of the women became millionaires overnight. the founder — knighted by the queen as Dame Stephanie — established a home for severely autistic children and adolescents, and invested money in autism research.

around 2017, when Dame Stephanie had heart surgery, I sent her a loaf of homemade bread. once, she gave me a bar of soap. the photo was taken in 2015 in her office, where we often sat for extensive talks — and tea. i did a radio special about her which is mainly in german. you find it → here.

i had something completely different in mind when midjourney created this picture. it does have flaws, but if you think of it as a piece of art, it is perfectly okay. if you need help in detecting typical Ai flaws, look at the hand of the person on the right:

1989 begann im → zündfunk des BR ein redaktioneller umbau. wolfgang truger wurde redakteur, die neue chefin sabine oehmichen ging relativ schnell, herbert mair kam. truger vertrat im zündfunk den unpolitischen flügel und „erfand“ die leichtgewichtige, voyeuristische sendung „bild date“. sabine oehmichen wirkte völlig überfordert, setzte sendungen ab und verwies etablierte moderatoren des hauses. herbert mair, zuvor korrespondent in israel, hatte keine ahnung vom „jugendfunk“ und setzte vier wochen nach seinem amtsantritt (2. oktober) zunächst den kommentar und drei tage später die redaktionssitzungen ab. ein jahr später kippte er (und frau oehmichen) meine sendung mit death metal texten. ich hielt die sendung für wichtig, aber das war nicht vermittelbar.

historisch gesehen war das eine übergangsphase, weil die alten redakteure woandershin aufstiegen, ins hörspiel, in die journalistenschule, in den zeitfunk. ich arbeitete 1990 schon für den WDR und den deutschlandfunk, zog nach london und dann nach köln und bekam von den weiteren entwicklungen nichts mehr mit.

wenn wir freie journalistInnen ein thema interessant finden, bieten wir es einer passenden redaktion an, die dann entscheidet, ob das thema in auftrag gegeben wird, oder nicht. das trifft auf print, fernsehen und natürlich auch auf den rundfunk zu.

ich hatte in den 1980er und frühen 1990er jahren das privileg einer „eigenen“ wöchentlichen sendung, die praktisch keiner redaktionellen kontrolle unterlag, sondern von mir allein gestaltet und moderiert war. die sendung war ernst (datenschutz, hacking, computertechnik, death metal) und lustig (das fröhliche plattenauspacken, das → faktor 5 rätsel, die kurzgeschichten von jefferson und dem haus mit den 106 stockwerken).

mit der zeit kamen mir immer mehr ideen, die ich dank studiotechnikerInnen und meinem eigenen sound-fähigen computer relativ schnell umsetzen konnte, wie in diesem beispiel. es gab dafür natürlich kein extra honorar; insgesamt waren die sendungen pauschal bezahlt. für späßchen wie diesem gab es eh kein budget.

the → gestapo was hitler’s secret police. it stripped everyone who got into the gestapo focus off their rights. the gestapo personnel treated their prisoners badly, often with torture and with a very dim future in the → dachau concentration camp.

the german historian → erich kasberger wrote the first book about the gestapo in munich. munich in 1933 was the testbed for the gestapo headquarter in berlin. kasberger ran into a massive problem: there are no original gestapo munich documents; they were all destoyed by an allied bomb attack. the book is based on lots and lots of transcripts of → spruchkammer-trials after world war 2. spruchkammer was an allied institution, a tool for punishing nazis and for denazification. many of the civil servants and policemen of the munich gestapo had to stand trial after the war. almost all of the leaders not only got free pretty soon, but made a second career in the secret service of the democratic republic of germany.

it took me two weeks to set up a list of around 800 employees of the munich gestapo HQ. today i’m happy to publish → the list in the german wikipedia. maybe you want to transfer it to other wiki languages?

1992 hatte ich einen macintosh centris mit einer soundkarte, die wie eine befreiung war. ich mochte tonbänder und studios; aber die digitale klangerzeugung war eine andere nummer, wenn es um komplexe miniaturen ging. hier ein jingle für den → zündfunk und das → radiotop damals:

mitte januar 1991 griffen die USA den irak an, der kurz zuvor kuwait annektiert hatte. dieser zweite golfkrieg „desert storm“ wurde live von CNN begleitet. es war zudem der erste krieg, der über PC-chats diskutiert wurde. ich schmiss meine → computersendung am 16. januar 1991 um und gab eine halbe stunde lang original-chats der vergangenen nacht wieder, aus dem englischen übersetzt. die zitate sprach ulrich möller-arnsberg. hier der sendungsmitschnitt:

in autumn 1991 i visited the compuserve computing centre in columbus/ohio. i did several interviews there, for public radio germany. pat phelps, the „grandmother of CB“ talks about the → chat simulator on compuserve – which was the first online chat systems ever. the interview has just landed in the wikipedia:

back in march 1965 the democratic president → lyndon b. johnson sent his national guard to alabama. why? because the → civil rights protests were harshly supressed by the alabama government. johnson decided to protect demonstrators against police violence. and he did not ask for any cooperation from the state governor → george wallace. wallace’s agenda was „segregation now, segregation tomorrow, and segregation forever“. he cut the right to vote for most black citizens.

60 years later a similar onset: protests in california. the president sent the national guard to LA to muffle the uproar. he did not talk to the califormia governor. but the political situation is exactly the other way round: while in 1965 the liberal president wanted to protect citizens, in 2025 the rightwing president fights against the protestors – because they demonstrate against his main agenda: the brutal deportation of citizens.

conny jahn war tontechniker im studio von → ralph siegel. er nahm schlager auf, zum beispiel → ein bisschen frieden, → dschinghis khan etc. ich traf ihn in dem studio im mai 1991, um über → digital audio tapes (DAT) im professionellen aufnahmebetrieb zu sprechen. conny jahn meinte damals, die cassetten seien der schwachpunkt, nicht die recorder. heute, 2025, weiß ich, dass es anders herum ist. wenn ich die → infos richtig lese, verstarb conny jahn 2018. ich habe die DAT mit dem interview auf den PC überspielt und einen → kurzen ausschnitt in die wikimedia commons hochgeladen. der o-ton ist auch im DAT-artikel der wikipedia.
