the daily worker newspaper devoted page 2 of its march 5, 1925 edition to “the communist woman” – a woman who is not man’s mistress, but equal. the two outstanding examples depicted here are the german communists → clara zetkin and → ruth fischer. fischer was 40 years younger than zetkin. both women fought within the german communist party about the party’s political direction. fischer got the “oberhand” in 1924, but stalin did not appreciate her extreme radical left course. zetkin returned to the head of the german communist party a year later, together with ernst thälmann. both women were members of the german parliament, the → reichstag.
