very well-done | depth of field

with the google pixel 2 smartphone i was quite amazed about its camera app. not the camera, but the app which drives the camera. it simulated the depth of field effect amazingly well. the current pixel 6 phone does an even better job, with less artifacts in “undecided“ regions of the scene. the photo below demonstrates this effect very well.

the effect is called “portrait mode“ in the camera app. i shot this photo in normal mode which turned out to be too complex to grasp at first sight. in normal mode the saddle is merely one of many objects in focus. the portrait mode picks out the saddle and the centre pole (and the left handle) very well, so you see at first glance what‘s strange about this special bicycle.
