in december 1980 personal computers were starting to get en vogue, but they were not there quite yet. william stockton, author of the new york times, wrote an article which contains three ingredients: marvin minsky’s teachings at MIT, HAL in kubrick’s movie “2001”, and the rapidly increasing amount of calculations per second. stockton phantasises about computers being able to understand human conversations and delivering the results to the police or other oppressive agencies.
