she came | back

We walked along the empty beach
Tree trunks and torn-up grass
Not a word passed our lips
Only the wind, the wind
Not a word passed our lips
Only the sand, the sand
When evening comes
And lies down with us in bed
We say adieu, my friend
We’ll see each other in another land
Not a word passed our lips
Then the sun came out
We looked at each other
We looked around
We had not fallen asleep here
The night had brought us here
Outside, no wind, no sand, no beach
Just you and me

You wandered through the grass
on which snow grew
A unicorn wobbled over the fence
The wren cried “Alarm”
No sun, only the moon
Then Bernhard came round the corner
A fast runner he was
But slow in old age
With heavy books in his sack
Salzburg is not my favourite city
In fact I hate Salzburg
That bloated confectioner’s little town
With the wretched violin teacher
And the beautiful English teacher
Lessons paid for by my grandfather
The teacher, shortly before the English lesson,
Was struck by an aerial bomb
It was the autumn of 1944
Yet everyone thought the confectioner’s town
Was of no interest to the bombers
I owe you nothing
