tieline’s reportIT app<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n

i did an interview the other day for national public radio here in cologne, germany, with a scientist 400 km away, in hamburg. like other high quality radio stations we more and more move from telephone acoustics to better means of audio quality.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

so i asked \u2192 microbiologist cornelia gessner<\/a> if she could install a radio compatible app (reportIT enterprise) on her smartphone, so that we could do the interview via that app. the app is based on a tieline codec for live compression. the audio quality live is good*, and i recorded that stream last night locally when i interviewed conny. we encountered some glitches during streaming. but the locally stored wav on conny’s phone was perfect \u2013 not as good as if i had visted hamburg with my marvellous sennheiser stereo mike, but a really good quality.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

ich habe gestern abend ein interview f\u00fcr den deutschlandfunk mit einer wissenschaftlerin 400 km weit weg in hamburg gef\u00fchrt. weil der DLF wie auch die BBC radio 4 und andere hochwertige sender nicht mehr so gern telefon-o-ton senden, bat ich \u2192 cornelia ge\u00dfner<\/a> (so hei\u00dft die mikrobiologin), sich eine app auf ihrem smartphone zu installieren, mit der sie in guter tonqualit\u00e4t \u00fcber den schaltraum zu mir ins studio kommt \u2013 ohne zum beispiel in den NDR gehen zu m\u00fcssen, wo ad hoc eh kein studio frei gewesen w\u00e4re.<\/p>\n

ich schnitt das interview lokal mit, wobei ich mal wieder die streaming-qualit\u00e4ten von reportIT testen konnte. es ging \u00fcber weite strecken gut, aber es gab auch paar herbe aussetzer*. nat\u00fcrlich war die datei auf connys phone lokal als wav gespeichert und wanderte via ftp-transfer zum DLF, wo ich sie mir vorgenommen habe.<\/p>\n

in the audio examples below<\/strong> you first hear two examples of the compressed audio versus the uncompressed wav in conny’s phone. then you hear some postproduction, first using iZotope’s RX6 de-clicker (without modification; worked brilliantly) and finally doing some intelligent EQing with iZotope’s neutron. it has a preset called „female dialogue“ \u2013 wonderful.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

the differences are certainly barely audible for non professionals. but for us radio pros the do make a bit difference.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

[three-fifths]in dem audiobeispiel unten<\/strong> beginne ich mit zwei beispielen der live (also mit codec) \u00fcbertragenen vs. die als wav lokal abgespeicherten dateien. dann wende ich, weil sich clicks, vermutlich von einem ring an connys finger, durch das ganze interview ziehen, den de-clicker von iZotope’s RX6 an. funktionierte sofort, keinerlei finetuning n\u00f6tig. schlie\u00dflich w\u00e4rmte ich connys stimme noch etwas mit neutron, ebenfalls von iZotope, an. neutron besteht aus einem sagen wir mal intelligenten equalizer, der hier mit einem preset „female dialogue“ schon gut funktionierte, aber mit der lernfunktion noch besser.<\/p>\n

die unterschiede sind f\u00fcr laien kaum zu h\u00f6ren, aber f\u00fcr uns rundfunkprofis ganz erheblich. enjoy.<\/p>\n
