Die Times von 1768<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mit unseren stetig wachsenden digitalen Datenbanken mache ich mir immer wieder mal ein Bild \u00fcber die Historie bestimmter Begriffe. F\u00fcr \u201eEnzyklop\u00e4die\u201c ging auch auf die Reise in zwei deutschsprachige und drei englischsprachige Zeitungsarchive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Der Begriff der „Enzyklop\u00e4die“ kommt in der Datenbank der DDR-Zeitungen (Staatsbibliothek Berlin) erstmals kurz nach Kriegsende vor, n\u00e4mlich am 16. Oktober 1945 in der Berliner Zeitung unter den Kleinanzeigen:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Enzyklop\u00e4die der techn. Chemie von Prof. Ullmann (10 B\u00e4nde und Sachreg.) in Halbleder neu gegen H\u00f6chstgebot zu verkaufen. Angeb. Erb. Felixberger, Charlottenburg, Wilmersdorfer Stra\u00dfe 79<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    In der Zeitungsbibiliothek Anno der\n\u00d6sterreichischen Nationalbibliothek taucht Enzyklop\u00e4die schon am 14. August\n1784 auf, n\u00e4mlich in den Provinzialnachrichten aus den kaiserl. K\u00f6nigl. Staaten\nund Erbl\u00e4ndern. Der Text beginnt so:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • XI: Gelehrte Nachrichten. Oekonomische Enzyklop\u00e4die oder allgemeines System der Staats-Stadt-Haus und Landwirthschaft in alphabetischer Ordnung, von D. Jo. Gr. Kr\u00fcntz, 29ter Theil, von Jan bis Inf. Nebst 4 Bog. Kupf. Berlin 1783, gr. 8. 2 Alph. 3 Bog. Mit dem Bildni\u00dfe des Verfasssers der Hausmutter und des Hausvaters Hrn. Pst. Germershausen. Auch in den Artikeln dieses Theiles wird niemand den gelehrten und erm\u00fcdeten Mann von Belesenheit und eigenen Einsichten verkennen.<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      In der Londoner Times kommt das Wort Encyclopedia\nerstmals am 16. November\n1786 vor:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      • A letter from Constantinople says, the Divan persist more and more in the design of liberally encouraging the arts and sciences; they have given orders for an immediate translation to be made in the Turkish language of the Dictionary Encyclopedia ; and the better to facilitate this work, for the benefit and intelligence of such Mussulmen as are lovers of Belles Letters, they have ordered all the engravings in the Paris edition to be copied therein; and to effect this they have bought all the plates they could procure both in France and Italy.<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        In der US-Presse tritt das Wort schon fr\u00fcher auf,\nerstmals um 1750, konkret etwa in der Zeitung Boston News vom 21. Mai 1752:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        • Paris, February 25. The Abbes de Prades and Yvon, whose Theses lately made such a Noise, are withdrawn into England, where Liberty of Speech and Printing is almost unlimited; their Drift, besides the Security of ther Persons, is to treat with the Booksellers of the Country, for a Continuation of the Encyclopedia ; several Articles in the Second Volume of that Work being ? to the late Duke of Orleans, he declared, such a Book ought to be suppressed.<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

          Am\n5. November 1851 zitiert die NYT den Scientific American vom 4. Oktober. Auch\nhier das erste Vorkommen des Begriffs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          • Encyclopedia of Science \u2013We have a number of dictionaries relating to Science and Art, and we have glossaries of scientific terms, and those relating to the operations and particular parts of machinery, & c., and we must pay this compliment to Webster\u2019s Quarto Dictionary. [\u2026] It is a real Encyclopedia of Science, for it not only gives the definition of scientific terms, but describes the nature of many chemical actions and the operations of many machines. [\u2026] We are proud of this work as an American production; it is certainly gratifying to know and feel that England looks to America as having now produced the standard work of the English language.<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
